Slowly plugging away…

Published! Finally figured out textbroker. Managed to pick and accept an article. Wrote it (on organic chia seeds, no less) and submitted it. It was a bit annoying because the rules are so specific. Certain number of words, then keywords and then it gets angry if there are too many of the keyword… Can you tell I am a huge lover of rules? Anyhow I did follow all those lovely little instructions and Bob’s your uncle they accepted it.

I was paid $4.50. But here’s the thing: no idea who the client is or was or where my article went or if my name is even attached to it. Funny thing textbroker. But yay! I am a published author again. Even submitted a second article on Uncle Grandpa. (People who are not on drugs: Uncle Grandpa is a cartoon that I imagine will eventually make everyone insane.)

Now it is time to start looking at my nanowrime novel and work it into something useable… Since I am still listed as ‘recieved’ on Analog it may also be time to write another short story and try Asimov. I love a good sci-fi. Plus I owe one of my oldest and best(est! Hee hee) of friends a Christmas story. Yes! So much writing to do.

And with that I am off to find out what a ‘jammy dodger’ is… thanks a lot Doctor Who…

Day 3: Writing Career

Today was a work day.

I meant to get up at 8:30 so I could go to the gym. I woke up at 9:20. I had no time for the gym. I ended up getting a shower and working on the illustrations I need to finish by Sunday Night. Then I worked with all my awesome friends at our min wage job. So that sucked up a lot of writing time. But do not be discouraged! Today I did some writing. (Other than the blog… which is me currently writing.)

I worked on a novel for NanoWriMo called Wolf Girls. It’s a fun coming of age story about werewolves…and murder. It needs a subplot in the rewrite but so far so good on the main story line. Anyhow, I finished that story while doing nano and Book 2. Well today I wrote almost 600 words in that story. That’s right, even after 8.5 hrs of work, oversleeping and the completion of the first of three illustrations I’m working on: I had time to write.

Feeling accomplished.

Also I opened a photobucket account. I am going to get into the Cracked.com Photoplasty contests. I want one of those under my belt and then I want to come up with a 5 Things Article… So step 1 complete.

Today was a good day. Even got some compliments on my book The Angry Rabbit.

Day 2 Writing Career….

Today I spent an awful lot of time not writing. There was laundry and Christmas shopping and lunch with Mom… Then there was art that had to be done since I am also an illustrator. I did manage to read a few articles on writing and marketing but unfortunately I didn’t get any actual writing done…well except for this! 🙂

I have started researching markets and I remembered that I used to have an account at Helium. Helium pays writers by the view or assignment. I had made some little money off of the site before when my career was starting. So I went back there and was shocked to see the entire interface had become something new. They assure me it’s better. But I have no idea how to work the dang thing.

I did update my writer’s information. I did not update my credentials. I will be doing so soon. As soon as I figure out a way to add ‘write a lot of Buffy fiction in the 90’s’ in a way that looks and sounds professional. Since it is late, I am now going to do some more research and hope for better results tomorrow.

Day 1: Writing Career?

I’ve decided to get my act together and go for a writing career. Don’t worry. I’m still going to illustrate and create art but I’ve wanted to be a published writer for as far back as I can remember. I’ve even had limited success in the past writing for a music magazine. I’ve also written web content and flash fiction that has gotten picked up. But after those small successes I never pushed harder. Now’s the time.

On November 30th I finished National Novel Writing Month’s challenge to write 50,000 words in one month and I cried. I was so proud and happy and accomplished. So now I am firmly of the mindset that writing is where it is at!

Step 1 is getting this blog going for real this time. There will be a multitude of posts from now on ( I hope.) And I will tell you about step 2 tomorrow… Wish me luck. I’m off to read a bunch of helpful tip sites. I will report back on what I find useful. Continue reading

Nanowrimo Winner with Broken Car!

It’s been a few weeks without my car and I’ve realized something very important about myself: I do not like when I can’t get to point B.

Also that I like to move around a lot but not when it’s cold. I’ve spent a lot of time indoors lately and not all of those hours were due to the enormous amount of time it takes to complete a 50,ooo word novel in a month. I have been writing until the fingers swell and then creating art until the eye starts twitching but mostly I’ve been avoiding the cold. I would love to retire to Florida at the ripe old age of thirty-five but someone needs to make my company grow and become even more infused with AWESOME!

On the work front I am attacking craft shows and banging out logos for a video company, a cake company and two bands. If you need a logo you should catch me while I’m on a winning streak. Fast turn over is complete with your files and a heady dose of sarcasm. The files are free. The sarcasm is double free. Also I’ve finally gotten my butt in gear and started reworking http://www.karenkalbacher.com. Pretty sure I should just be using it to link to here. That’s the fun and lazy way to do things, less labor intensive. We’ll see, the index page is updated..but not uploaded so tomorrow will be decision day for that loverly nightmare project. I love the old page even if it is in red and my WordPress is in pale-tastic blue. Stay tuned for updates to my awesomeness.

…And also for when my car gets back on the road.

Hey if you have a place of business that likes my art, I will hang it on your walls. Just tell me where and when to show up and how weird I can be. I’m really a fun alternative to ‘traditional’ art which I consider boring because no one uses lime green in fused with psycho radioactive green or candy apple… if you prefer normal names for SUPER COLORS!!!!

Oh and as for winning Nano – I finished a whole day early! I got my donor halo and I ordered a tee. I love writing, writers and all of you.

Nanowrimo is Coming

Halloween is almost here! Hayrides, Ghost Tours, Parties & Pumpkin themed everything.  All leading up to the night where I am disappointed in kids. I have 3 steps! Why won’t you guys climb the 3 lousy steps? Damn it I get the chocolate…none of that cheap gum that tastes like the wrapper garbage. I have high quality chocolate. But the walk is soooo long. Then I get cranky like an old auntie and start talking about how we went out at 6pm and didn’t come back til out pillowcases were full. Finally I eat most of the candy myself. (Next year I’m investing in a slingshot–chocolate attack!)

But the benefit is:  SUPER HYPER SUGAR CRAZE!

And that’s when October ends & Nanowrimo begins.

50,000 words in one month. I failed 2 years in a row because my life took some crazy twists & turns but this year…. I’m ready.
